Building A Faster Horse

parislemon:

Farhad Manjoo on the new Square Stand:

Translation: Credit cards will be here for a good long time. This isn’t a novel admission; Dorsey has always said that he doesn’t think plastic will go away anytime soon. But the launch of the Square Stand—a device engineered to improve the credit card experience—shows how deeply Square is betting on credit cards. It’s as if, after building the Model T, Henry Ford also spent a lot of money to build a faster horse, just to hedge his bets. In this way, Square Stand prompts a deeper question: What if, as wonderful as Square Wallet is, we just never move beyond credit cards? What if people find faster horses good enough?

How 3D Printing Has Changed Society Forever - PSFK

“In the next five to ten years, another 5 billion people will join the Internet,” said Schmidt, the company’s chief executive and one of the world’s richest men.

Most of those people will be in places like Asia, Africa and South America. And while newfound access to information will level the playing field to a degree, it will also set the table for the world’s villains as much as the up-and-comers, noted Cohen, Google’s director of ideas, who spent nearly half a decade at the State Department. This coming influx means we’ll keep seeing repressive governments censoring and stifling information and Internet access. And terrorists and hacker groups will continue to battle law enforcement in a fight that seems never ending.

A recent survey of nearly 35,000 eight to 16-year-olds by the U.K.’s National Literacy Trust found that for the first time, more kids are reading via electronic devices than traditional books. A full 52 percent preferred reading books on a tablet or other electronic device, while in comparison, only 32 percent preferred traditional books. The remaining 16 percent had no preference or said they don’t like to read.

Behind the Scenes of Our New iOS Comic Reading Experience | Kobo Cafe

whatmakesuptheweb:

By Kobo Labs:

We recently launched a new update to the Kobo iOS app (version 5.10) which includes support for Japanese content, improved font resizing, and a faster and more responsive reading experience for comics.

We’re particularly excited about this new comic experience, which we think readers are really going to like. It provides a fluid reading experience, complete with seamless loading times so that you can read without any interruptions or delays. The approach we took in developing this new viewer was a bit unconventional, and so for the more technically minded here’s some background from the Kobo Labs team’s lead iOS developer on what went into building it.
